Overlooking the River Ness, Inverness Castle is a striking red sandstone building that dominates the skyline of the city. Although the current structure was built in the 19th century and is not open to the public for tours at this time, the grounds and surrounding viewpoint offer fantastic panoramas of Inverness and the Highlands. The castle’s location has been the site of fortifications for centuries, with earlier castles playing roles in significant historical events, including the Jacobite uprisings. While we won’t be able to tour the interior, the history and commanding views still make this a must-see stop on our journey through Inverness.
