Few people know that Sir William Wallace was basely betrayed and captured within the boundaries of Glasgow. This monument was erected by the Scottish Patriotic Association to mark the site of the house where the Wallace was taken by forces acting for Edward I. This Celtic cross memorial was raised by public subscription through the efforts of the Rev David Macrae and the Scottish Patriotic Association. The Wallace Monument – a 20 foot high granite Celtic cross – was unveiled before a crowd of 1,000 people at 4:30pm on Saturday 4th August 1900 by Miss Emmeline McKerlie, a direct descendant of Kerlie, Wallace’s companion who was slain during his capture. The Memorial Committee for the monument later handed over custody of the monument to Cadder Parish Council. Both the monument and the Wallace’s Well are now the responsibility of Glasgow City Council. Annual ceremonies are held at this site every August to mark his betrayal.
